The holidays are a time for giving, and the needs in Southwest Florida are great. United Cerebral Palsy of Southwest Florida in Cape Coral is working to fill those needs. Their contributions and support for families in the area were recently featured in the local news’ “12 Days of Giving” Series. The holiday-themed initiative is a great opportunity for people to give back while supporting local people with disabilities and their families all year long …. even after the holidays have ended.

#GivingTuesday is a national campaign started in 2012 to encourage support for charitable organizations. Last year, the first Giving Tuesday event attracted donations to about 2,600 nonprofits in the US. The concept, which has now spread to Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, was the brainchild of the 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community center in New York. Considering the generosity associated with the season, Sunrise is hopeful that “Giving Tuesday” will prompt people into thinking about charitable giving in a different way. To GIVE, visit Sunrise’s website and learn more!

After decades of changing lives through adaptive water sports, Shake-A-Leg is still making “first time” and “once-in-a-lifetime” experiences a reality for adults with profound intellectual and physical disabilities. Just last month, Shake-A-Leg led by Captain Craig Kirk welcomed adults from Sunrise’s 120 person campus for a “Day at Sea.” The weekend was part self-rediscovery, part embodied journey, and part group adventure. Everyone (Sunrise staff included) had a remarkable time. Our warmest thanks to Shake-A-Leg for its holistic approach to water sports and for helping give “adaptive sea legs” to people with mobility limitations.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2013, the Florida Marlins hosted a special evening recognizing their fans of all abilities. Game night against the Phillies kicked off with a spectacular rendition of the National Anthem sung by Kassandra Spann. Promoting the self-determination of people with disabilities, Spann represented Sunrise Community Inc. on the special night where we were named the beneficiary of the Marlins Foundation 50/50 raffle during the game. A fun time was had by all as self-advocates, staff, volunteers and supporters of Sunrise were in attendance to cheer on the Marlins! Thank you to our generous Miami Marlins!!
