Sunrise Community Art Exhibit at ArtSouth Cultural Center

July 20, 2009 through August 21, 2009

WHO’S PARTICIPATING?

Miami – July 17, 2009 -The artwork currently displayed at ArtSouth Cultural Center in Homestead, Florida, was created by talented men and women who attend Sunrise Community’s Adult Day Training Centers in Doral and Homestead.

Sunrise Community, a nationally recognized not-for-profit organization, has established a reputation for excellence in assisting people with developmental disabilities live a full and dignified life.

TELL ME ABOUT THE EXHIBIT?

The bright colored artwork which varies in size and shape was conceived and created by Program Coordinator, Ms. Rosario Reiche, who wanted to initiate an art activity that would capture the attention of the participants and embrace everyone’s abilities. Rosario adapted the 19th Century technique known as Pointillism to serve as the platform for this creative undertaking.

The project requires Sunrise participants to roll up small pieces of tissue paper, previously cut by staff members, which are then placed in clear glass jars.   While Sunrise clients perform this task, Rosario draws the design on a cardboard canvas and/or construction paper, colors the various parts of the design and the rest is up to the group.   Glue is spread on specific parts of the design and each member of the team carefully begins to fill in the design with miniature rolls of paper, much like digital pixels, giving the design texture and form.

The result is nothing less than spectacular; truly a must-see for everyone, whether you are an art aficionado or not. Come visit ArtSouth in July/August and prepare to be amazed by the Sunrise series ~ “Rays & Shades of Sunrise.”   This art form requires a great deal of patience, concentration, time, dexterity, and most importantly “passion for doing something you love” says Ms. Reiche.

This collection also features watercolors, beautifully-decorated photo frames, and an assortment of artwork created with paper products. The most impressive part of this section of the exhibit is that many of the artists involved require continuous guidance and hands-on assistance from dedicated and caring staff members.

Adults with Special Needs help K-Kids with Mother’s Day Project at the

Sunrise Log Cabin Nursery on Miami Beach – May 8, 2009

 WHO’S PARTICIPATING?

Miami – May 4, 2009 - Children from Biscayne Elementary School in Miami Beach will be part of a special Community Outreach project which is guaranteed to bring smiles to the faces of some very happy mothers on Mother’s Day.

This Mother’s Day project has been planned for months by school officials and carefully coordinated by the project sponsor – the North Shore Kiwanis Club. About 40 to 60 enthusiastic fourth, fifth and sixth graders, accompanied by school faculty members, will be welcomed by the staff at the Sunrise Log Cabin Nursery, a not-for-profit organization, which operates as a retail plant nursery and serves as a work site for people with intellectual and physical challenges.

WHAT’S THE EVENT ABOUT?

The K-Kids & Safety Patrols children involved in this special event will learn about planting, repotting, and the intricacies of general plant care from the people that work at the Sunrise Log Cabin Nursery.     At the end of the project, all of the children will bring home a potted plant to present to Mom on their special day. But that’s not all they will bring back with them. “Our goal with this particular project is for the children to gain greater understanding of others’ abilities, to respect differences, and to perpetuate the idea that everyone can learn from others, despite perceived limitations” said Jennifer Holcomb, Elementary Teacher, and Lead Coordinator for this project.
