The holidays are a time for giving, and the needs in Southwest Florida are great. United Cerebral Palsy of Southwest Florida in Cape Coral is working to fill those needs. Their contributions and support for families in the area were recently featured in the local news’ “12 Days of Giving” Series. The holiday-themed initiative is a great opportunity for people to give back while supporting local people with disabilities and their families all year long …. even after the holidays have ended.

United Cerebral Palsy of Southwest Florida celebrates the diversity of those we serve, our staff and our supporters throughout the year with a variety of holiday celebrations and observances, family and community gatherings, and festive workshops. For many, celebrating holidays brings back fond memories of years past as well as sparks interest in what is yet to come. As 2013 draws to an end, one author in Cape Coral’s Creative Writing Group is embracing memories made while looking towards a very bright future.

The countdown has begun!! There are only seven more weeks until the Inaugural Barbara Hobbs Gala in Tampa! This year’s theme is the “Super Tailgate For Charity.” All the money raised goes directly to provide vital services for people with intellectual and physical disabilities as well as specialized, assistive equipment and facilities in the Greater Tampa area. Few of these would exist without the support of the local community. What a great event this is set to be. It doesn’t get much better than this!!

International Human Rights Day was created in the aftermath of WWII, the Declaration was the first global expression of the rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. The date of Human Rights Day was chosen to honor the Declaration’s adoption by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948. But for all the countries that recognize the declaration and protect its citizens, not every voice is heard. Your voice is still needed!!

#GivingTuesday is a national campaign started in 2012 to encourage support for charitable organizations. Last year, the first Giving Tuesday event attracted donations to about 2,600 nonprofits in the US. The concept, which has now spread to Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, was the brainchild of the 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community center in New York. Considering the generosity associated with the season, Sunrise is hopeful that “Giving Tuesday” will prompt people into thinking about charitable giving in a different way.
